PENKRIDGE PROBATE INVENTORY PROJECT.
The transcription of the Penkridge probate inventories was the work of an adult education class under the auspices of Keele University Department of Continuing and Professional Education, tutor, Rose Wheat.
Categories for analysis (using the Stockport model ).
The category any item may belong to may depend on the context in which it is found and although judgements should be as consistent as possible, the way items are valued collectively may mean that numerous inconsistencies will occur.
Category 1 : Agriculture and livestock. ( all animals except HORSES).
2.Animals.
a.cattle.
b.sheep
c.pigs.
d.others (poultry, goats, bees etc.)
3.Equipment: harrows, ploughs, carts. Churns, powdering tubs, cheesepress, malt mill ( where appropriate).
4.Crops and cereals etc.
a.on the ground.
b.In store/ in the barn etc.
c.Cheese, butter, bacon, beef (for trade rather than domestic
Consumption).
d.wool, flax and hemp.
Category 5 : Trade.
6.Materials finished/ unfinished : fuel (where appropriate) leather, shop goods.
7.Equipment : scales, lasts, wheels, looms and geares (depending on scale of the operation).
Category 8 : Domestic.
9.Bedroom furnishings : beds ( feather, chaff, flock ), bedsteads, trucklebeds, bolsters, sheets, blankets, curtains, valances, pillow beares.
10.Cooking and eating equipment : jacks, spits, gobirons (gobberts), potrack, pans, knives, forks, spoons, pewterware, earthenware, trenchers, treenware, brassware, tubs, barrels, bottles, dishes. Items for storage and preparation.
11. Fire equipment : grates, fire shovels, tongs, bellows, ironware.
12. Solid furniture : chests, tables, chairs, forms, coffers, stools, cupboards, wainscot, doors, shelves, presses, trunks, boxes, desks, wheels, screens.
13. Textiles : carpets, cushions ( except in bedrooms), yarn ( except where stock in trade), linen, napery ware, table cloths, towels, napkins.
14. Other: smoothing irons, pictures, looking glasses, books, fuel (coal, peat), lumber and things not valued.
Category 15 : Plate and Jewelry.
16. Gold/ silverware.
17. Personal ornament.
Category 18 : Food and Drink. (for consumption not trade ).
Category 19 : Horses and Horse gear.
20.Animals.
21.Gear.
Category 22 : Apparel. (except where linked to cash)
Category 23 : Cash ( plus apparel).
Category 24 : Houses, leases, land.
Category 25 : Debts.
26.Debts by bond or specialty.
27.Other debts.
Category 28 : Debts owed by the deceased.
